Hopefully during these long summer days you're vacationing to somewhere wonderful. Until then, a quilt project can tide you over! Mine usually comes in the form of Hawaiian quilting, usually done in batiks.
The next two posts will take you to Hawaii!
In the quilt below, I love the study in contrasts projected in the fabric choices.
It was fun to add a bit of 'art quilting' to the Hibiscus. Click on any of these pictures to zoom in on texture or quilting.
On a trip to Maui a few years ago, I took a needle-turn appliqué class at the Maui Quilt Shop in Kihei. Even though I am a longarm quilter, I enjoy all methods of quilting.
Pictured below are two pillow kits I purchased at the shop, one of which I finished on a long stay on the island in the evenings. The quilt behind the pillows was made that same year, free-motion quilted in ferns. Needle-turn is so relaxing, especially to the sounds of surf...
I love taking left-over materials - maybe a single block or extra fabric - to make placemats or table-runners. These runners were taken right off my kitchen and dining room tables for this photo shoot...
The sea glass was found on the south coast of Kauai. Sea glass is basically garbage that has been thrown miles offshore, which tumbles through the Hawaiian sands and coral for decades until it comes to rest on the beach. I love the jewelry a very good friend of mine has crafted for me here in Colorado - which is very expensive purchased on the islands.
Be sure to visit again later this month for more Hawaiian quilts and treasures.
Mahalo!
